Frequently Asked Questions

Loop Living Cocoon™

Why choose a Loop Living Cocoon™?

Saying goodbye is one of life’s most meaningful moments. But traditional coffins leave behind more than memories, they leave pollution, deforestation, and carbon emissions. Shouldn’t your final act be your greatest? The Cocoon™ is grown from local mushrooms and empowers you to give back. It is 100% nature, fully biodegradable within 45 days and actively enriches the soil, allowing new life to thrive. A conscious choice for those who wish to leave the world better for future generations.

Mission

What is the mission behind Loop Biotech?

At Loop Biotech, our mission is simple: to enrich nature. Today’s funerals leave behind a scar, pollution, deforestation, and CO₂ emissions. We believe it’s time to do better. By growing the world’s first mushroom-based funeral products, we turn endings into new beginnings. Using mycelium, nature’s most powerful recycler, we create 100% natural, biodegradable, and soil-enriching products that nourish the earth rather than harm it. Because your last act shouldn’t leave a footprint, it should feed the future.

Loop Biotech was born from a simple yet powerful question during our graduation at Delft University of Technology: Even after we die, we harm our beautiful planet, cutting down ancient trees, emitting CO₂, and polluting the soil with toxic chemicals. But what if we didn’t leave a scar? What if we gave new life instead, for our loved ones? We didn’t want to work against nature, but with it. Not work with dead materials, but collaborate with living organisms.

We set out to create a new generation of products, not ones that pollute the Earth, but ones that enrich it. Inspired by the regenerative power of mycelium, the underground root network of mushrooms and nature’s most powerful recycler, we developed the world’s first mushroom coffin, the Loop Living Cocoon™, along with the Loop Forestbed™ and the LoopEarthrise™. Starting from that vision, we’ve grown a mission to help humanity turn endings into new beginnings.

Because even in death, we are harming our beautiful planet. Emitting CO₂, polluting the soil, and depleting natural resources on a massive scale. Millions of (ancient) trees, grown over decades, are cut down each year for coffins used for mere minutes. These coffins are often decorated with metals and coated in toxic glues and lacquers that poison our vulnerable soil. Embalming introduces formaldehyde into the ground, a known carcinogen. Cremation emits up to 208 kg of CO₂ per body [TNO], turning grief into greenhouse gas. This is the hidden footprint of our final act: wasteful, toxic, and irreversible. Why pollute the Earth when you die, when you can give life back for the generations still to come?

Luckily not needing a product just yet? You can contribute in different ways. Building a new world where we enrich nature instead of polluting requires collective effort. Whether you’re an individual, a professional, or simply someone passionate about making a positive impact, there are many meaningful ways to join and support our mission:

Together, we can turn endings into new beginnings. Let’s enrich nature.

Absolutely. If you want to contribute and make an impact in our mission to enrich nature, we’d love to hear from you. You can apply to join our team and help build the future. Not looking for a job but still want to get involved? Become a Loop Ambassador and help us share our story, inspire others, and bring regenerative funerals to your community. Together, we’re growing the world we want to live in.

Loop Biotech is open for individual investors who want to be part of our mission to enrich nature. If you believe in a regenerative future and want to support the acceleration of the world’s first mushroom funeral products, we invite you to join the waiting list and be the first to hear about upcoming investment opportunities. Together, we are building a company that gives back to the Earth.

Growing process

What is mycelium?

Mycelium is the root-like structure of mushrooms, consisting of an extensive network of hyphae. It plays a crucial role in natural ecosystems by breaking down organic matter and facilitating nutrient cycling. At Loop Biotech, we collaborate with nature by growing materials together with this living organism. In just 7 days, we grow biodegradable products that return to the soil and enrich it, restoring life to its natural habitat.

Mushroom-based materials offer a scientifically supported and eco-friendly alternative to conventional coffin materials. They grow rapidly, within 7 days, using low-value agricultural by-products like upcycled hemp fibers, and decompose naturally in about 45 days, much faster than traditional wooden coffins. Producing these materials requires significantly less energy, resulting in a positive carbon footprint. Research shows that mushrooms enhance soil quality and increase biodiversity by providing carbon-rich energy.

We grow each product by combining mycelium, the root system of mushrooms, with locally upcycled hemp fibres. This natural mixture is placed into a mould, where the mycelium grows and binds everything together into a solid structure. No glue, no chemicals, just fascinating biology. Over the course of 7 days, nature does the work and the organism takes shape. The result is a strong, fully natural material that can be used for natural burial, traditional burial, or cremation. Once placed in the soil, the mycelium reactivates and continues its work, breaking down within 45 days under ideal conditions, releasing carbon and nutrients that enrich the soil and boost local biodiversity.

All products are grown in our dedicated growing facility in the Netherlands. Using locally sourced materials and low-energy processes, each product is cultivated under carefully controlled conditions to ensure strength, safety, and consistency. Curious to see how it works? You’re welcome to join one of our factory tours and witness the growing process up close. Sign up via our event page.

Once buried, the mycelium reactivates and resumes its natural role as a recycler of life. Grown from a local, noninvasive fungal species, it works in harmony with the ecosystem. As it biodegrades, typically within 45 days under ideal conditions, it forms a porous structure that improves airflow and moisture retention, enhancing microbial activity and facilitating natural decomposition processes.. In the process, it releases carbon and energy resources that enrich the soil, support plant growth, and nourish microorganisms. The mycelium becomes part of the local food web, contributing to a thriving ecosystem.
